The career as a firefighter is not easy. There is much hype associated with the firefighter. However, the fact is it is very dangerous and exciting career and requires very tough and quick decision making power. Today firefighting field becomes specialized. You have an option of three basic types of firefighting career:

1. Urban fire fighting
2. Wild land fire fighting
3. Industrial firefighting

To become fire fighter, you must be physically and mentally very fit. You must keep yourself in good shape. These will help you in passing the physical examination of fire fighting department. The examination which all firefighters should pass is ability to handle high pressure hose, breaking different obstacles for clearing the way and many others.

Most firefighting departments take up the student of high school; however there is some area where knowledge of fire is essential. In that case the person with associate degree in fire science is preferred.

A recruitment criterion for fire fighter varies from States to states, but you must undergo the special training conducted by the firefighting department. The Application for firefighter is similar to the civil service examination. After clearing that exam, you will be enrolled in to the department's main data. You will be called for further training whenever need arises. After successful completion of training you will be absorbed in to the firefighting department and become the firefighter.

When you become firefighter, your entire mental and physical agilities are tested on every occasion. Remember that this is the occupation which does not give you good remuneration but if you prefer challenge and excitement then this is the best career that will give you plenty of challenges. Once you have some experience as a firefighter, you can specialize in to other field related to fire fighting. There are high demands for private industrial firefighters. Most hazardous companies employ their own firefighter staffs and they offer very good remunerations apart from other usual benefits.
