Firefighter CPAT

Becoming a firefighter requires a lot of aptitudes, including a perfect physical condition. The following article consists of a complete guide for the people that want to become firefighters and require additional information.

The Firefighter CPAT consists of eight separate tests and is organized by the local State. The tests require the candidate to follow a certain path, evolving from test to test in a logical manner. He will only be allowed to proceed after completing the current test or event.

The entire test consists of events that are developed to reproduce actual tasks that are often seen during actual fire scenes. The firefighter CPAT is also developed to create a group of suitable candidates for firefighting stations in your area so this is not the only test you will have to pass before becoming a firefighter. The CPAT is a pass/fail event which does not include grading or other methods of measuring a candidate’s performance. If you do not reach the end of the path mentioned above you will receive a fail. If you do, you will receive a pass. You also need to reach the end in a predetermined time to be accepted. This is 10 minutes and 20 seconds.

Before starting the actual test, you will be required to present identification documents and to sign a series of forms. You will also be presented with a demonstration of the test so that it is clear what the firefighter CPAT requires you to accomplish.

You will wear additional weights to simulate the weight of the complete equipment a firefighter wears during an intervention. This weight adds up to a total of 75 pounds. Watches and jewelry that restricts normal movement are forbidden.

The entire procedure is a standardized one and will not allow any kind of cheating or outside help. For timing accuracy and reliability, two stopwatches will be used. One is designated as the official timer and the second is the backup, in case the official one fails. If the official stopwatch fails the time for the firefighter CPAT will be that indicated by the backup.
