First of all you have to be at least 18 if you want to start practicing in this field of expertise. You also need to be perfectly clear about what firefighter’s job is. Future firefighters need to be intelligent people in order to perform their job as well as possible. In this respect, the requirements for becoming a firefighter include having a high school diploma or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED).

After providing with that you can start worrying about one of the toughest of the requirements for becoming a firefighter, the physical exam. This is a very tough test, requiring you to be very strong, fit and with a low of stamina. If everything is in order until now, you will be required to pass a medical test that includes a drug screening. Former or actual drug users will not be accepted, that is for sure. If you passed all these requirements you can start thinking about taking the first firefighter exams. All of the information required for this can be gathered from your local station or from the State itself. Only attempt these after you are certain that you are ready and that you will want to do this for a living.

If you pass the tests you will have to follow your local firefighting program to be trained in basic and advanced techniques of firefighting. This is followed by a probationary employment period that can last from three to six months, depending on several aspects.
